The official name of wisdom teeth is third molars. They are the final permanent teeth to grow and usually start appearing when people are between 17 and 25 years old. However, some never have wisdom teeth develop.
The nickname “wisdom teeth” was given to this set of four teeth because they grow after a person is an adult.
Wisdom teeth don’t always cause dental problems. They can grow along with other molars and the person never needs them removed. The American Dental Association recommends that wisdom teeth be removed if they cause damage to other teeth, become infected, or show decay.
Impacted wisdom teeth can result in serious oral infections so they need to be removed. Another reason for wisdom teeth extraction is the patient’s mouth is too small to accommodate them. Wisdom teeth can crowd out other teeth, causing other teeth to become crooked.

Removing a wisdom tooth involves the dentist making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth. They then remove the bone to get to the root of the tooth. The tooth is removed and the site is cleaned.
The dentist may then stitch the wound to help with healing, although this isn’t always the case. Gauze is placed on the extraction site to stop bleeding.
